Which PC for an architect or engineering firm?
AutoCAD, Revit, ArchiCAD, SketchUp, structural software, 3D renders: architects and engineering firms need far more powerful machines than a typical office. An underpowered PC wastes hours every week.
Processor: clock speed before core count
Modelling in AutoCAD or Revit mostly uses a single core, so a high-frequency processor (recent Intel Core i7/i9 or AMD Ryzen 7/9) feels smooth. Many cores mainly help with photorealistic rendering.
Graphics card: essential for 3D
- 2D drafting: an entry-level GPU is enough;
- 3D, BIM and walkthroughs: a dedicated card with at least 8 GB of video memory;
- real-time rendering (Lumion, Twinmotion, Enscape): aim higher, these tools are demanding.
Memory and storage
32 GB of RAM for comfortable BIM work, 16 GB as a minimum for 2D and small projects, plus an NVMe SSD for active projects and a server for archives.
Desktop or laptop?
In the office, a desktop workstation gives the most power for the money and runs cooler, a real advantage in Marrakech summers. For site visits and client presentations, a powerful laptop works; gaming laptops often have the right GPU for less than mobile workstations.
Monitors and plotter
Two 27-inch screens, or a 2K/4K monitor, make a daily difference: plan on one side, 3D view on the other. To print A1 and A0 plans, you need a wide-format plotter; compare speed, width (24 or 36 inches) and ink cost.
Back up your projects
Months of work fit in a few files: a server or NAS with automatic backup is vital. See server for a small business.
