Slow or dropping Wi-Fi in an office or riad: how to fix it
Guests complaining about Wi-Fi in their rooms, video calls dropping, a printer nobody can find: in Marrakech offices, hotels and riads, the problem is rarely the internet subscription. It is almost always the way the network is installed.
Why Wi-Fi struggles
- Thick walls: traditional riads are built with rammed earth, solid brick or stone that block radio waves. One router cannot cover every room.
- Floors and the patio: the signal has to cross several levels and the rooftop terrace.
- The ISP router is designed for an apartment, not for twenty guests at once.
- Cheap repeaters often halve the speed and disconnect devices as people move around.
- One network for everything: guests, staff, cameras and the till share the same bandwidth with no security.
Quick checks
- Test the speed with a cable plugged into the router. Good on cable and bad on Wi-Fi means a coverage problem.
- Place the router high and central, never in a cupboard.
- Restart and update the router.
- Count connected devices at peak times.
The lasting solution: wired access points
Several Wi-Fi access points, each connected by network cable to a switch, cover every area (reception, each floor, terrace, meeting room) with a single network, so devices move between them without dropping. Add a separate guest network, a per-device speed limit and central management. Where cabling is impossible, a quality mesh system is a good alternative if each unit is well placed.
